Project: Poetry Anthology Students choose their favorite poems as the basis for a poetry anthology. This is a detailed list of expectations and a rubric.
Rules and Practice: Rhetoric- Euphemisms (middle school) Students learn about euphemisms by example, and then are encouraged to create their own.

Item Description
Poem: Trouble (upper elem/ middle) A poetry reading comprehension about a broken window.
Poetry Prompt: Emotions (upper elem) General emotions poetry form and a happy poem activity. Includes instructions for brainstorming words and writing poems.
Poetry: Death in Poetry This unit contains three famous poems ("The Highwayman", "Annabel Lee", and "The Cremation of Sam McGee") which address the topic of death. Questions for each poem regarding content, form, and style will help students analyze and understand poetry. An introduction to basic poetry terms is included, to enable students to answer the questions and discuss the poems.
Poetry: Dreams Three activities to help students write poems about their dreams.
Poetry: How to Write a Ballad (elementary/ upper elem) This lesson helps students learn to write their own ballads. A great stand-alone lesson, or it can be used in conjunction with another unit.
Poetry: How to Write a Limerick (elem/ upper elem) A fantastic how-to lesson that will get your students having fun writing their own limericks in no time. A great St. Patrick's Day tie-in!
Poetry: The Highwayman Questions regarding content, form, and style will help students analyze and understand poetry. The full text of Noyes's poem is included.
Poetry: Thought and Analysis (upper/middle) Read the poem, identify the poetic devices (metaphor, etc.); then ponder and discuss questions to create greater understanding.
Poetry: What is Poetry? (upper elem) In pairs, students answer a number of questions about what they think poetry is. Then, at the end of a poetry lesson (either text-based or teacher-created), students refer back to their original answers to measure what they have learned.
